How to Choose an Electroplating Method? Analysis of Four Mainstream Processes

Electroplating technology has now developed into a key modern processing technique. It not only provides protection and decoration for metal surfaces, but also endows substrates with special functionality.

At present, there are over 60 types of coatings available in industry, covering more than 20 types of single metal coatings (including commonly used metals and rare and precious metals) and over 40 types of alloy coatings, with over 240 types of alloy systems in the research stage. To meet different production needs, the corresponding electroplating processing methods are becoming increasingly diverse.

Electroplating is essentially a process that utilizes the principle of electrolysis to deposit a thin film of metal or alloy on the surface of a workpiece, in order to achieve the purpose of protection, beautification, or endowing specific functions. Here are four common electroplating processing methods:

1. Rack plating

The workpiece is clamped by a hanging fixture, suitable for larger parts such as car bumpers, bicycle handlebars, etc. Each batch has a limited processing quantity and is mostly used in situations where the coating thickness exceeds 10 μ m. The production line can be divided into two forms: manual and automatic.

2. Continuous plating

The workpiece passes through each electroplating tank in a continuous manner to complete the entire process. Mainly used for products such as wire and strip that can be continuously produced in batches.

3. Brush plating

Also known as selective electroplating. By using a plating pen or brush (connected to the anode and filled with plating solution) to locally move on the surface of the workpiece as the cathode, fixed-point deposition is achieved. Suitable for local plating or repair plating.

4. Barrel plating

Specially designed for small parts. Place a certain number of loose parts in a drum and perform electroplating in an indirect conductive manner while rolling. According to different equipment, it is mainly divided into three categories: horizontal barrel plating, inclined rolling plating, and vibration barrel plating.

With the advancement of technology, electroplating methods continue to enrich, and plating solution systems, formulas and additives, power equipment, etc. continue to evolve, driving the entire industry towards a more efficient and diversified direction.
